True or Not? Fake websites

22. juli 2008 by system

"I hear that there is this site on the web, where you can buy human meat for consumption. Surely not?"

Well, yes and no. B
ack in 2001 there was in fact a site called www.manbeef.com (no longer online). Well designed and filled with pictures, illustrations, and recipes the ManBeef site marketed themselves as being "the world’s leading human meat distributor". For a few months in early 2001 the site caused quite a stir. With more than 500,000 hits a day and a lot of media attention, the controversy prompted the U.S. Food & Drug Administration to launch an investigation. However, they found no evidence that any meat had ever been sold, and in June the site creator finally issued a statement that it was in fact - a hoax!

Toby was the fluffy pet rabbit of the anonymous webmaster of savetoby.com, which was going to eat Toby, unless he received $50,000 in donations to help care for it. The media had a field day with this one. The animal rights groups were up in arms. And people send money. The original deadline for receiving the money was June 30, 2005. This was later extended several times. In December 2006 a statement was posted that Bored.com had bought the site, and that Toby was now saved. According to the webmaster $24,000 had been collected in total. Did Toby ever really exist? Would he have been eaten? No one knows.

Drivers license check
A lot of people were upset, when they heard about this site http://www.license.shorturl.com. It allows you to look up any license plate number and get an instant ID of the owner, and the privacy loving American people don't like that sort of thing. Fortunately - it's a hoax!

Haggis is NOT a sheep’s stomach stuffed with meat and oatmeal. It is in fact a reclusive creature indigenous to the Scottish Highlands. That's what the Scottish Newspaper the Scotsman wants us to believe. At Haggis Hunt you can read all about them, and maybe even catch a glimpse of one with one of the Haggis Cams.
This is a rather obvious hoax, but surveys actually show that almost a third of American visitors to Scotland, believe the Haggis to be a real animal.

In 2000 this website emerged: http://www.malepregnancy.com/. It was supposed to be the day-by-day coverage of the first ever male pregnancy. Mr. Lee Mingwei's personal miracle was created with the help of medical facility GenoChoice. Ultrasounds, scientific info and a very convincing website had people guessing for quite a while. It was off course a hoax. Created by Taiwanese artists Virgil Wong and Lee Mingwei to provoke and to inspire debate.
BUT... the hoax has now become reality!! Well... sort of. Mr. Thomas Beatie of Oregon is pregnant. He was born a woman, but he IS a man NOW, and he IS pregnant. The world was at first doubtful, but in April 2008 he went on Oprah and had an ultrasound to prove it.

Today's lesson - Don't believe everything you read on the Internet.

Gadgets: Transports of tomorrow

3. juli 2008 by Dog

In 2001 the future of personal transportation was unveiled in the form of the Segway. The 2 wheeled electric vehicle was predicted to "be to the car what the car was to the horse and buggy". It didn't quite turn out that way. It is still out there and is still selling moderately, but not nearly as well as the inventors had hoped. But the Segway's lack of success has by no means discuraged others from trying to come up with the answers to the burning question: what will be the transportation of tomorrow?
Now cars are cars, and allthough their design can be changed and tweeked a bit here and there, they remain in essence... cars. But how about some other means of transport?

The Uno is something completely new. A one wheeled... motorcycle? Except off course it isn't exactly ONE wheeled. It has in fact two wheels side-by-side making it appear as one. The design is spectacular and rather alarming - surely it can't be safe?!?

Then there's the ecologically sound enclosed electric motorcycle designed by students at Saint Thomas Academy. It's... ahhh... green. And rather quaint looking, but hardly sleek and cool enough to be a big seller anytime soon.

Much better looking is the upcoming TGV manufactured Side-Bike Celtik and Zeus. The are insanely cool and will turn heads anywhere they go (once released), but to be honest... they are basically just pimped up traditional trike and sidecar, so not very innovative.

Innovative is the single seater electric car HUVO from Japanese Topia Corp. It weighs a mere 150kg because of the unique combination of materials used in its build. And it looks futuristic.

But if none of the above options tickles your fancy, there is one future vehicle left to check out. Not a very likely future perhaps, but who knows what tomorrow brings, right? Behold.... the Batpod:

Now THAT'S something to look forward to.

Update from my world

2. juli 2008 by Dog

Hi all! It's been FOREVER since I have last found time to post. I'm sooo sorry. Time just flies by so quickly. Now summer is here and allthough the days are therefore much longer, there never seems to be enough minutes to the day. I am as busy as ever. I thought I’d just give you a quick run down of some of the things I’ve been doing:

I still spend a lot of time picking out cool new games for you all to play on my “Winston’s Playpen” side. New ones will be added later on today.

I spend a lot of time at the local park. It’s nice and cool there in the mornings and the evenings. I try not to go in the middle of the day as it gets way too hot for me.

I still have trouble keeping still, when I need to get my picture taken, but that’s mostly a ploy – you see, if I move around enough, they bribe me with sausages to sit nicely.

And lastly there are of course always lots of things that needs chewing up – my specialty.

More from me soon.

Computer City rocks!

9. juni 2008 by Dog

I have almost forgotten to tell you this. A couple of weeks ago I visited two of the major computer stores in Denmark - both of them are part of the Computer City chain. Our sales crew took me there, and it was great fun. I got to meet all the sales personel at the stores and lots of costomers as well. As usual I was really exited, and that ment I had my tongue out my mouth most of the time, and I did a lot of huffing and puffing as well. Luckily most people recognise that as being part of my special Bulldog charm, though occationally people got a little concerned for my health. No need to worry, folks, I'm as strong as a horse ;)

Videos of me!!

19. maj 2008 by Dog

I finally got around to edit and upload some of the many videos, I have had lying around. They are on YouTube at the moment, but I'll gather them up and put them on this website too real soon. However, for now you can go watch them at my YouTube page. There are just a couple right now, but more will be added, as I get them ready and uploaded.
For now you can enjoy watching me at 5 months old filmed at the Mojos' Kennel in Chaam, Holland. Back then I wasn't really very good at keeping my balance and I spend most of my time playing with my MANY (9!!) siblings. My, how I've grown!!

Two more at YouTube. ENJOY!

I REALLY don't like... BATHS!

7. maj 2008 by Dog
I’m a happy dog. I have a good life. There are, however, a few things I could really - REALLY – do without. At the VERY top of that list is… baths! It’s one of those things that just make you want to cry out: “WHY?” I smell good, when I’m unwashed. All the things I have rolled in, rubbed up against and sat on, leave a pleasant odeur around me. It’s nice. But after I’ve gone through the horrorific, wet and humiliating process of a shower, I smell like… wet dog! No one likes that. So why?

Thank God for balls though. I find that they make up for all that is wrong with the world… even baths.

A-list Bulldogs

2. maj 2008 by Dog
Everyone knows that the stars love pets. Anything that's small and furry are covetet by movie and music stars alike. So who has the great taste and common sense to pick Bulldogs as their four legged companions?
Well, the best known bully owner might be Adam Sandler, whose now late buddy Meatball took part in his wedding... in a tailormade tux. Nowadays, Adam shares his life with new girl Matzoball, who he brought with him - and interviewed - when he filled in for David Letterman on his show. Another truly dedicated Bulldog lover is Gloria Estefan, who wrote two children's books about her girl Noelle. Gorgeous tiger striped gal btw. Off course most famous of all may be the Osbourne's Lola, who was the undisputed star of that show! And another fiiiine looking bullgal, if I may say so. Who else... ? Well, movie darling Reese Witherspoon, tough guy Fred Durst of Limb Bizkit fame, minister's daughter gone bad Jessica Biel and politically incorrect radio star Howard Starn all have succomed to the flatnosed charm.
And the celebrity whose bully I most envy? Singer Pink's handsome boy Elvis. Imagine - to get daily belly rubs from Pink... mmmm....

Summer lurks

25. april 2008 by Dog

It's right around the corner - the hot summer season. The temperatures are rising day by day and the trees are growing foliage. Everyone is looking forward to having to wear less clothes, long day spent outside, barbeques. But even though summer is cool, there are a few things dog owners should be aware of:

Heat strokes. I for one am very suseptable to those. Bulldog don't do heat very well. But all dogs need to take it slowly when temperatures get over 85 degrees F (29 degrees C). Don't let you dog run at those temperatures, and keep us supplied with plenty of cool water and shade.
Moldy food. Food spoils faster in the hot season. Keep your doggy feed in a nice cool place, and consider buying smaller amounts of food at a time, to keep it fresh.
Paw burns. The pavement gets HOT. If you wouldn't walk barefooted on a sidewalk, don't let us.
Ticks. Playing outside in the summer means ticks. NASTY little buggers. But the diseases they carry can be prevented. Stop by the vet during spring for pre-emptive treatment.

And most importantly... water, shade and loving care ensures summer fun for both man and dog.
Until then I'll just take a nap.

There is hope for the future!

17. april 2008 by Dog

There is hope for the future!
I was just watching David Lynch's 1984 movie "Dune", and I was THRILLED to learn that my breed will survive the passing of time - there are Bulldogs in the future!!! In a scene set in the palace of the "Emperor of the Known Universe" a whole bunch of English bullies are seen pass by. I find this is highly encouraging. Not only will our breed live on in the exact same shape as we have now, but apparently we will also be the pet of choice for the aristocracy of times to come. Yay.
For lovers of our little cousins, the Pugs, there is equal hope. The main characters Paul Atreides is seen holding one later on in the movie.

For more on this wonderful sci-fi vision, which holds many more points of merit than dogs, see these sites:

And of course... behold the future bullies:

GADGETS: Robots, mobiles and power napping

11. april 2008 by Dog
Time for some more cool new inventions!
Some people have a hard time getting used to the iPhones lack of tactile buttons. Here's the solution. Don't want an iPhone at all...? Well, the get in line for Nokia's upcoming competitor - the Tube. Won't be out for another year, though.
Another Apple product faces competition too. The Insanely popular Mac Air will soon have to share the market with this Intel ultra thin netbook . Especially the price is likely to make it interesting - about one tenth of the Mac Air.
Robots are COOL, but while I really would like this little fella to be my friend, I'm not so sure about this one. He has no head!! And no tail to wag! Now that is just too creepy for a dog like me.
And something very low tech, but seriously smart - the NapPak. For those all important power naps at the office. Very practical.
Retro is the way to go. If you don't believe me, check out these brilliant Rolleiflex cameras. How cool are they? Also see the Leica D-Lux 3 and the LeicaM8.

More gadgets soon :)
