BullGuard Mobile Security

Antivirus for smart phones

Security issues surrounding smartphones is a growing concern. Some reports suggest that the number of spyware and malware programs detected on such handhelds has more than tripled in the last year, and are exponentially rising. A large reason for this is that many of the types of threats that would typically target a computer are easily adapted to target smartphones.

These might involve spyware that could report sensitive information such as text messages, contacts, voice communications and GPS co-ordinates back to a third party without the user's knowledge. Worse, some malware attacks work in the form of auto-dialers that call premium rate numbers, potentially incurring huge fees.

When you consider the amount of personal data that would typically be stored on a mobile phone in comparison to a home computer, it's not hard to imagine how dangerous it could be if it were to fall into the wrong hands.

This is why we have redesigned our previous Mobile Antivirus product into a full security suite BullGuard Mobile Security provides comprehensive  protection by including both an Antivirus engine, Backup module, Parental Control and Antitheft features.

The BullGuard Antivirus engine allows you to scan for infected files, spyware applications and to schedule regular scans. With frequent updates and periodic scan tasks, the Antivirus is the first line of defence when it comes to keeping your mobile environment safe and virus free.

At the Antivirus main screen, press the Blackberry Menu button to access the various functions and options:

Scan Now
: allows you to start a scan task.

OnDemand Scan Log
: open the history file where you can review previous scan tasks and their results.

FileMonitor Log
: displays the real-time file monitor record and previous viruses that were caught by BullGuard.

: displays all infected files present in the Quarantine folder allowing you to either delete or restore them.

Virus List
: displays a list with the known viruses.

: allows you to enable or disable the Antivirus real-time file monitor feature.

: opens the Antivirus help file.

: closes the Menu options.

Scanning your device with BullGuard Mobile Security

Once BullGuard is registered and running on your device, you can start scanning your phone for malware to make sure your phone is clean. Mobile Security allows you to scan the entire phone, specific folders and to setup scheduled device scans.

For the best scan results we recommend that you keep the Antivirus module up-to-date. Once you in the Antivirus plug-in, select the Update now option.

BullGuard will connect to our servers and then download the new signature files. A notification message will let you know when the virus definition files have been downloaded and implemented. Use the phone’s Back button or Menu and then Close to return to the BullGuard main screen.

Note that the time required for an update will depend on your device and the Internet connection type your phone is currently using.

To start a scan task, click the Menu button once in the Antivirus section and choose Scan now. You will be presented several scan options:

Scan applications: enables the Antivirus to scan the installed applications on the device.

Scan internal files
: enables the Antivirus to scan the file from the device’s storage. Uncheck this option if you want the Antivirus to skip files from your phone’s memory.

Scan SD Card
: enables the Antivirus to scan the files located on the attached memory card (if present). Uncheck this option if you want to scan only files from your device’s memory.

Exclude media files
: when enabled, allows you to exclude media files (pictures, audio or video files) from scan tasks.

Custom Scan
: allows you to scan specific files or folders from your device. It will disable the previous scan options and will fully scan your target folder.

To begin scanning your device according to the selected options, press the Menu button and choose Start Scan. The scan window displays both scanned files and whether infections were detected.

Once completed, all infected files detected during the scan are automatically moved to the Antivirus Quarantine. The scan report screen displays the detected viruses and the file path where they were found. To close this screen, press either Back or Menu and then Close on your phone.

All files moved to Quarantine during the scan are rendered harmless by the Antivirus. To permanently remove the infected file from your device or to restore possible false positive detection cases, open the Quarantine folder by pressing the device Menu button at the Antivirus Main screen.

Select any item present in the Quarantine and press the Menu button to either delete or restore the selected file.
