I got PSW.BRISS.C in Jan. took until late april to get rid of it. ( I bought a new hard-drive) I hope I haven't gotten it again.

I restared my computer and instead of the choices of OS or Safe Mode, etc... displaying

It gave me only one choice...

BRISSFULLIFE

As if it was an Operating System!

No other options or OSs were shown. I forced it off and restarted... this time it gave me normal options, I restored to earlier today... and everything seems normal. But I am scared because I can't find info on the web on this occurrence, has anyone else heard of brissfullife?

When I was infected with this briss, none of the virus progs could identify it until april 19, I had it for 3-4 months before, there was even any knowlege of it.

At that time I took it to several pros, who F-disked it re-installed and it was always back within the same day. Hi-jacking my computer and communicating with the web w/o permission, as well as turning on my microphone. I finally, out of frustration , bought a new Hard-drive.

this fixed the problem..... BUT, if this is anything like the last.... trouble is coming!

I have ewido, spybot, adaware, AVG free( which detected it in jan), script sentry, and zone-alarm protecting my PC.... none of them are detecting anything....

ANY IDEAs I have attached my hijackthis log. It won't let me upload either file. says no plain text files and no octet stream... I will post it if anyone responds.

I think I know the problem. Programs can't magically open microphone ports without thoroughly scanning the computer. This is unlikely however, you'd notice it quickly ( 5% CPU before program starts, 100% CPU usage after program starts ).

What has happened is a cracker has placed a file deep within your hard drive ( because you said replacing the hard drive fixed it ). And making a new OS in the options isn't all that hard. All that is required is a simple boot.ini modification ( Once again, probably needs a human to complete ). I have heard of something called a 'Low level format.' I'm sure if you Google it you'll find a program that does it. With low level format it literally puts the hard drive to the condition the factory sent it to you ( You'll have to do a normal format afterwords ). While a regular format simply deletes the data, a low level format deletes it a billion times and deletes the boot record ( where you problem is probably at ). So dual boot your new hard drive and your old hard drive and low level format the old one. Reboot. Format it. And it should be fixed (Presuming the new drive wasn't infected; if it was, it's time to do a low level format on that and do the same process over on the old drive so it doesn't simply respread.)

After doing all that, simply change your IP and you should be safe.

Thank you. About the CPU usage, it was often using 100% of the CPU and making me unable to do anything but turn it off and it was sending as much info out to the web as my dsl would allow. I will look for a low-level formatting program. I just hope that this hard drive is isn't infected now, because this is the one I saw the rogue OS on, although I did have a rogue OS on the other one that I revealed at one point. This one seems like a cheeky joke, IT ACTUALLY SAID "BRISSFULLLIFE" hmmmm strange. it seems to be working okay now, but I will do that procedure to my other HD incase I need to use it to fix this one soon. Last time the prob got progressively worse..... Thanks
