I seem to get getting a lot of entries on my traffic log for outgoing traffic to *MULTICAST*[239.255.255.250], originating from \system32\svchost.exe - is this a sign of something going on that I should be worried about? I play Ultima Online, which doesn't show up on my traffic report - could that conceivably be the source of this activity?

Assistance and reassurance much welcomed.

These reports come up when the game is not running, and so don't seem to be related, if that's of any help to anyone.

I don't know much about it, but I think it is normal for the system32 part of Windows to use the internet. Apparently some malware can pretend to be part of system32, trying to disguise it's real purpose, but I heard that most anti virus programs can spot this. I would suggest if you have scanned your machine and it is clear there is probably nothing to worry about.

The activity reports seem to be being generated by something on this machine called "Acer eConsole" (PC is an Acer prebuilt), not svchost.exe - looks like a media program launcher of some sort. My laptop doesn't do anything like this, and there's nothing Acer about that machine at all.
