I'll do that tonight. I ran that one in safe mode. I can tell you that while in safe mode my regedit and task manager work but msconfig doesn't. In normal mode my Norton Inter. Prot. keeps telling me it's blocking a W32.Spybot worm. When I look at the Norton log it say the location of the worm is C:/WINDOWS/b.exe. When I go there through explorer it's not there.

Beside the programs you suggested I already had Registry Mechanic. Not sure if that will help.

I appreciate your help on this. I got infected when my son decided to download Limewire. I caught it but the damage was done.

Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it.

close the program

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad as you will be in Safe Mode and unable to refer to this page.

Reboot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded.

The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.

Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.

Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Start Superantispyware/rightclick on the black/yellow bug in tray.

Hit - Scan Your Computer - button

Click on the drive(s) you want to scan. Put a check in - Perform Complete Scan, then next

it will scan now. When scan have finished, put a checkmark with all items it found. Next, after cleaning, let it Reboot

Start Superantispyware again –

Click Preferences and then click the statistics/logs tab.

Click the dated log and press view log and a text file will appear.

Post this log along with fresh hijackthis log and tell how things are running

I did both and after reboot back to normal mode Norton Int. Prot. blocked the W32.spybot worm located at C:/windows/b.exe.

Regedit, taskmgr, and msconfig still don't work.

Please download AVG Antispyware Ewido Anti-Malware

Install AVG Antispyware
Launch AVG Antispyware , there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will now open to the main screen.
When you run AVG Antispyware for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

You will need to update AVG Antispyware to the latest definition files.

On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")

Exit AVG Antispyware , do not run the scan yet!

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG Antispyware .

Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "BFU"

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller.
Unzip it to its own folder (c:\BFU)

Rightclick - http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra Remover. Save it in the folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not run the Uninstaller and the Remover yet.

Please reboot into Safemode:
Turn on the computer.
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key (or F5 on some computers)
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

1. Lauch AVG Antispyware by double-clicking the icon on the desktop. IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess.

2. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan"

3. AVG Antispyware will now begin the scanning process. Be patient as this may take a little time.

4. While scanning, ewido will list any infections found on the left side.

5. When the scan is completed, the recommended action should be set to Quarantine. If not click Recommended Action and set it there. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right side.

6. Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).

7. Close AVG Antispyware .

Open My Computer and navigate to the c:\BFU folder. Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe

In the scriptline to execute field copy and paste c:\bfu\alcanshorty.bfu
Press execute and let it do its job.

Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

Reboot into normal windows and post the contents of AVG Antispyware text report that you saved and a new HiJackThis log and tell how things are running

I'll do these next steps tonight. I have a question. Will I be able to uninstall all these programs at some point? I think I've installed 5 or 6 spyware/virus programs since we started. Thankyou for all your help.

Ok, the AVG Anti-Spyware took about 4 hours to run. I had a problem with 2 parts of your last directions. The first was toward the middle you ask me to double click ATF Cleaner. I've never downloaded that in my earlier directions.

The other is I had a problem with this http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu

I downloaded Brut force ok and ran it ok but the above url won't let me save as or save target as when I right click on it. I just saved the opened file to the bfu folder I created but when I ran bfu it wouldn't accept the html file in the scriptfile. It would start to run and then stop with an error and shutdown. I tried to copy and paste the test file itself but the bfu scriptline entry only takes one line at a time. I ran bfu without it.

Oh! The good news is regedit and taskmgr work now. msconfig still doesn't.
