Help please. My home page has been hijacked and starting progs off the desktop takes longer and some need clicking on more than once to activate. So far attempts to use various spyware has not resolved the problem. The new home page is:res://rveof.dll/index.html#35759 and I, inevitably, get loads of pop-upd trying to get me to use their spyware removers.

You should run a scan with Adaware, Pestpatrol and Spybot S&D
Are you running any antivirus ? if not try a free trial of bullguard burger

Thanks. I am running Norton av. I have tried spybot and ad aware with no luck but have fared better with spywareguard although this continually comes up telling me a BHO is trying to change my homepage and when I click to remove all registry entries it says it has worked only for the same thing to happen all over again. This even comes up when I am "off line", or at least have disconnected my broadband connection on screen. Each time I click on IE it doe go to my homepage but only after I have clicked to say that the hijack should not be accepted. I really would like to get rid of this pest. It is particularly annoying as I have kept right up to date with windows updates, virus defs etc etc and am now probably going to rebuild when I am on holiday in a couple of weeks.

I've got an even meaner question.
What version of windows are you running? XP perhaps? If so let us know then we can help.

I'm running Windows XP Home. I have run ad-aware 6 which I'd updated. It found a number of things which I have deleted. I have also run Spywareguard which found a lot and has reset my home page. However, it now comes up even when I am off line telling me an attempt is being made to hijack my home page and I have to tell it not to allow this. This happens about once a minute! However, having switched Spywareguard off, going on line has taken me to my orginal home page and things almost, dare I say it, seem back to normal. I'm just nervous about using my credit card on-line. Any thoughts?

 Hey Kempo,
Understand why your leary of credit card use online I am too. As far as your hijack goes have you still got your system restore on? Just in case you do here's what you need to do. First do a disk clean you will find that in system tools, when the scan window pops up to tell you how you can achieve this go to the more options tab, click on it. there will be three buttons the bottom one says delete all restore points click it then hit ok. then go into your control panel click basic info on your computer click restore tab and put a check in the box by shut down system restore. The reason I am telling you this is because viruses tend to write themselves into the restore system so they can come back when you restart. also If I were you I would download bullguard(uninstall norton first) do a scan it will find things that norton and most others can't.
Good luck And let me know how it goes.

Dear Eagle,
Many thanks. Once I have finshed writing all the school pupil reports I have at present I will try what you suggest. I thought I had cracked it last night when all seemed to be working well but when I booted up this morning it was back to square one! At least everything else on the computer works. It seems to me that what you say about system restore makes sense, it's not working anymore anyway as that was the first solution I tried last week! Will let you know how I get on, thanks again.

Kempo.

Dear Eagle,
I might, empasise might, have success. I shut down system restore as you suggested and after two runs with an updated ad-aware6, including a cold reboot, I have now been running for a while without problems. I have kept SpywareGuard running and it has, so far, not shown a single attempt to hijack my home page which is now back to where I want it. I have non uninstalled Norton so far, mainly because I have the full versionof Norton System Works and it took a while to configure this. I will do as you say and uninstall it and try Bullguard if I have more problems. My only concern now is that I can still see some references in my registry to the old hijack of res.//bykhb etc and as I have no experience of playing around with registry files am terrified of deleting etc. I still suspect that I haven't completely removed the pest! But, so far, so good.

Many thanks, Kempo.

Hey kempo,
you've done fine, the registry if you are not familiar with it can be daunting. I hope you have continued success and best of luck.

Dear Eagle,
Many thanks for all your help. Here in cold and wet London at least I'm happy for the moment. A whole day on and still all is fine. The ad-aware run twice, once after the cold reboot, plus turning off system restore seems to have done the trick. The "only the best" pop up has not appeared once, my home page has stayed as it should and SpywareGuard hasn't come up once warning of a BHO attack. It all seems too good to be true. I'd like to turn system restore back on but am wary because I'm sure those couple of odd entries in the registry referring to the orginal hijack might start it off all over again. What do you think?
Kempo.

Hi kempo,
It probably wouldn't hurt, But if that happens again you'll know how to handle it anyway. If you want it out of the regedit let me know I'll walk you thru it.
