Hi - this is my first post. I'd be very grateful for help in getting rid of the lovely Elitebar which adorns my IExplorer.

One of my home network PCs was used by my lads for Kazar etc etc and is now infested with adware and Trojans. I have tried Spybot, Ad-Aware, CW Shredder, Norton Anti Virus and AOL spyware checker. I seem to have zapped a fair few, but Elitebar is the most persistent.

Could someone please check my Hijack This! log below and let me know (1) what I have to do to get rid of Elitebar (and anything else nasty). (2) whether this would account for a series of curious events like Taskbar not working, Rundll not closing, Liveupdate refusing to update NAV and Windows XP SP-2 causing all browsers to crash.

Many thanks.

Mark

Ok, just  in case, download this:
Download Kazaa Begone, and Lspfix: http://computercops.biz/downloads-file-...eGone.html
Read carefully how to use, before download and run them.
You shall only use Lspfix, if you loose netconnection.

Scan with Hijacktis, close all other windows, put a checkmark to these, and fix:

Many thanks for the help.

I have run the programs twice over. In Ad-aware I guessed the green checkmarks in the Advance Settings. The link you gave for the VX-2 cleaner is broken, so you may want to update your records. Also the CWShredder updates are not available (the site is down).

I have got rid of another ton of Adware on the PC, but unfortunately not Elitebar! You can see this in the Hijackthis log. If there is any chance of having another look at the new log, I'd be very very grateful.

Regards

Mark

Hey, ready for next stepsmilewinkgrin
Please download peperfix.
Click on the PeperFix.exe to launch it.
Click the Find and Fix button.
It will scan the %systemroot% folder and locate all the peper files. You will be prompted to restart your computer. Restart and it will delete the peper files.
This should work for Cwshredder: http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/10/17/10-17-150.shtml
Download, and run it.

Boot to safe mode- F8
Scan with HijackThis , close all other windows and browsers, and place a checkmark next to these items, and fix:

Hey I seemed to have the same problem too. Elitebar just won't go away. I've tried everything that is posted on the net .EVERYTHING (HJT, reboot in safemode and delete , adware, spybot , regedit.....uyou've named it, I've tried it......well mmmmmm.....i haven't updated to SP 2 yet ) and everytime I restart the computer, the elitebar folder just pops up in the windows folder. Apparently i think there's some kind of hidden setup file that i do not know of........ARRRRRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHHHHHHH .......its driving me nuts.!!!!!!!!!!

Eric,
When I get home tonight I'm going to give Elitebar a blast with everything suggested by Touch. If it works, I will be our Danish Friend's best ever mate.

OK - hopefully we are in the final straight.

I still can't get updates for CWshredder but it scans and shows the system is clean. Also Peperfix and Vx2 show it as OK. Using Hijackthis in safe mode I removed all the items you suggested. So far so good.

The manual remove of the EliteBar files was not so straightforward. In C:\windows\elitebar I found an "EliteBar version 40.dll" and a version 48.dll file. There was also a folder containing links for porn etc.

Seems I had two older types rather than Elitebar 50. I deleted both .dll files AND the links folder. For good measure I have deleted the C:Windows/Elitebar folder itself.

Also, I can't find a "Unpv.exe" file anywhere, although I have deleted winsil32.exe.

The Hijackthis! log is below.

If you have sorted this out, you are a real hero. Thanks for everything.

Mark

Thanks Touch,

The system seems clean now.

By the way, I can now download SP-2 and access the internet after having downloaded it. Task Manager also works. I couldn't do either before. It seems that EliteBar (or some of the other Spyware that was on my system) may conflict with SP-2 and stop SP-2 working propely.

I mention this for your own information and for anyone else who found the same problem.

Best of luck with your work.

Mark
