I experienced a few times that Bullguard detects a type of Win32 Worm Autorun virus but leaves the screen blank in Windows XP, even the Start button is dead. A blank screen means that Windows settings are not restored by Bullguard. After some digging it turned to be a registry key that placed explorer.exe in a sort of debugger state. You can see explorer on the disk in c:\windows but cannot start it.
Look for: HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Image File Executions/explorer.exe remove the Debugger registry key and restart.
BTW in a blank screen use Ctrl-Alt-Del for the Task Manager to start programs as regedit etc.
